For each of the six spots you get the shots we plan, a pose to try, the best light, what to wear and the permit rules you need to know.
Weddings Unlimited has been photographing Texas and Arizona couples since 2010, with 8,000+ weddings behind us. Use this guide to pick a spot that feels like you, then let us handle the permits, the timing and the posing.

How to Use This Guide
The best engagement location is not always the most popular one. It is the one where you can relax, laugh, walk and look like yourselves. Pick a vibe first: skyline and city energy, gardens, nature and water, or classic landmarks. Then choose one or two spots close together so you spend your session in front of the camera instead of in traffic.
Every location below includes the permit and access rules we checked in September 2026. Rules change, so we confirm them again before your session and handle any permit for you.
1. Mission San José Engagement Photos
Photographed here: Adriana & David. See their full engagement gallery

Why Mission San José is one of the best engagement photo spots in San Antonio
The Queen of the Missions and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adriana and David’s session moved from the limestone church and bell tower to the long arched walls of the convento and the old carved wooden doors.
Shot ideas at Mission San José
The church facade and bell tower, the arched convento walls, carved stone doorways, and weathered wooden doors.
A pose to try
The forehead touch against a sunlit limestone wall.
What to wear
Landmarks earn a dressier look: a long gown or cocktail dress and a suit or blazer. Classic architecture rewards classic styling.
2. Japanese Tea Garden Engagement Photos
Photographed here: Sarah & Jacob. See their full engagement gallery

Why Japanese Tea Garden is one of the best engagement photo spots in San Antonio
A former rock quarry turned into terraced gardens, koi ponds, stone bridges, a waterfall and a pagoda-style pavilion. Sarah and Jacob wound down the stone stairways to the ponds, and Tobie and Arnie found the waterfall on their own session.
Shot ideas at Japanese Tea Garden
The stone stairways and bridges over the koi ponds, the waterfall, and the pavilion across the water.
A pose to try
The back hug on a stone bridge, looking out over the ponds.
What to wear
Earthy tones photograph beautifully outdoors: rust, olive, denim, cream and camel. Wear shoes you can walk in and bring the nicer pair for the final frames.
3. McNay Art Museum Engagement Photos
Photographed here: Kaylynn & Daniel. See their full engagement gallery

Why McNay Art Museum is one of the best engagement photo spots in San Antonio
Texas’s first modern art museum lives in a 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival mansion with tiled courtyards, carved doorways, fountains and sculpture gardens. We have photographed three sessions here: Kaylynn and Daniel, Jennifer and William and Debbie and Daniel.
Shot ideas at McNay Art Museum
The white mansion from the lawn, carved doorways and tiled courtyards, the fountain, and the pond in the garden.
A pose to try
The almost kiss in a shady courtyard corner.
What to wear
Landmarks earn a dressier look: a long gown or cocktail dress and a suit or blazer. Classic architecture rewards classic styling.
4. The River Walk Engagement Photos
Photographed here: Sierra & Daniel. See their full engagement gallery

Why The River Walk is one of the best engagement photo spots in San Antonio
Arched stone bridges, cypress trees, flowers and hotel balconies right over the water. Sierra and Daniel started in a historic downtown hotel, then followed the river past the stone bridges and stairways.
Shot ideas at The River Walk
Portraits on the arched stone bridges, riverside walks under the cypress trees, stone stairways and historic hotel lobbies.
A pose to try
The dip: in a grand hotel lobby, or on a quiet stretch of the river.
What to wear
City spots love contrast and clean lines: a black dress, a tailored suit or jacket, or crisp neutrals with one bold color. Skip busy patterns that fight with murals and signage.
5. Brackenridge Park Engagement Photos
Photographed here: Rebecca & Christopher. See their full engagement gallery

Why Brackenridge Park is one of the best engagement photo spots in San Antonio
Old oaks, stone walls and historic iron bridges over the upper San Antonio River, right next door to the Japanese Tea Garden. Rebecca and Christopher paired the two for a garden-and-river session.
Shot ideas at Brackenridge Park
Walks across the iron truss bridges, stone-wall portraits under the trees, and the river through the arches.
A pose to try
The twirl on the bridge deck. The third spin is the keeper.
What to wear
Earthy tones photograph beautifully outdoors: rust, olive, denim, cream and camel. Wear shoes you can walk in and bring the nicer pair for the final frames.
6. Éilan Hotel & Spa Engagement Photos
Photographed here: Lilly & Sean. See their full engagement gallery

Why Éilan Hotel & Spa is one of the best engagement photo spots in San Antonio
A Tuscan-style village with a cobblestone piazza, colorful facades, grand staircases and a chandelier-lit lobby. Lilly and Sean went from the piazza to the stairs and then inside for a glamorous finish.
Shot ideas at Éilan Hotel & Spa
Walks across the piazza, the grand staircases, colorful facades, and a warm, glowing set inside.
A pose to try
The walk and talk across the piazza, hand in hand.

Six Engagement Poses That Work Anywhere in San Antonio
Not camera-confident? Almost nobody is at first. These are the prompts our photographers use at every session, and every photo below is a real San Antonio couple doing that exact pose. You never have to memorize a thing.
The Walk and Talk

Hold hands and walk slowly toward the camera while you talk to each other about anything but the photos. Swing your hands a little. Nobody looks at the lens. Movement kills stiffness. This is the pose we start every session with.
The Forehead Touch

Stand close, close your eyes and rest your foreheads together. Breathe out. We move in tight and wait for the tiny smile that always shows up. Quiet, intimate and the one parents frame.
The Back Hug

One partner stands behind the other, arms wrapped around the waist, chin resting on the shoulder. Both of you look out at the view, then turn in for a kiss on the cheek. Perfect anywhere with a view, and it shows off the ring hand.
The Almost Kiss

Lean in slowly and stop about an inch apart. Hold it for a breath. We shoot the moment just before, which always looks better than the kiss itself. All the romance, none of the awkward squish.
The Twirl and Dip

One partner spins the other out and back in, then finishes with a slow dip. Do it three times; the third is always the keeper. Moves the dress or jacket and brings out real laughter.
The Laugh Break

We whisper something ridiculous for one of you to say in the other’s ear. You will laugh, and that is the photo. The frame couples tell us is their favorite, every time.
When to Take Engagement Photos in San Antonio
| Season | When | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March to April | Wildflowers and bluebonnets along the roadsides and mild evenings. The most requested season, so book early. |
| Summer | June to September | Hot. We shoot at sunrise at the Missions or in the shady gardens, and hotels give you a cool indoor plan. |
| Fall | October to November | Warm light and cooler evenings, perfect for the River Walk and the McNay. |
| Winter | December to February | The River Walk holiday lights, crisp evenings and early sunsets, so sessions start earlier. |
San Antonio Engagement Photo Planning Tips
1. Plan around the light
Golden hour, the last one to two hours before sunset, is the most flattering light in Texas. In summer, sunrise sessions beat both the heat and the crowds.
2. Check permits before the session
Several San Antonio favorites require a permit, a reservation or a paid session fee. We check and book them for every session so there are no surprises on the day.
3. Bring two outfits
One relaxed, one dressier. Changing halfway makes it feel like two different sessions and gives you more variety for save-the-dates.
4. Think about your wedding style
Planning a garden wedding? A city session gives you contrast. A downtown ballroom wedding? Hill Country or lakeside photos round out your story.
5. Pick a place that means something
The spot where you had your first date or got engaged will always mean more than the most popular wall in town.

Frequently Asked Questions About San Antonio Engagement Photo Locations
Where are the best places to take engagement photos in San Antonio?
Our favorites are the places we have actually photographed real couples: Mission San José, the Japanese Tea Garden, the McNay Art Museum, the River Walk, Brackenridge Park and Éilan Hotel. Pick historic missions, gardens, a Spanish Colonial mansion or the river, and we will build the session around it.
Do you need a permit for engagement photos in San Antonio?
It depends on the spot. The River Walk and Brackenridge Park are public, the Missions are a national historical park with active parishes, the McNay offers grounds photography passes, and hotels like Éilan are private. The city also sets rules for professional photography in its parks and gardens. We check the rules and handle every permit and reservation for you.
How much does an engagement photography session cost in San Antonio?
Pricing depends on session length and whether it is bundled with wedding photography. Many couples add their San Antonio engagement session to a photography bundle at no extra sitting fee, so reach out for a San Antonio-specific quote.
How long is an engagement photography session?
Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That is enough time for two outfits and one or two locations close together without feeling rushed.
When is the best time of year for engagement photos in San Antonio?
Spring and fall. March and April bring wildflowers and mild evenings, and October and November bring cooler nights and warm light. In summer we shoot at sunrise, and in winter the River Walk holiday lights are magic.
What time of day is best for engagement photos in San Antonio?
Golden hour, the last one to two hours before sunset, gives the softest, warmest light. At the Missions and on the River Walk, sunrise gives you the place almost to yourselves.
What should we wear to our San Antonio engagement session?
Bring one relaxed outfit and one dressier option. Solid colors and texture photograph best, and you should coordinate rather than match. Soft, light colors look beautiful against the Missions’ limestone and the McNay’s white walls, and jewel tones pop at the River Walk and Éilan.
Can we do two locations in one session?
Yes. Pair spots that sit close together, like the Japanese Tea Garden and Brackenridge Park, or the McNay and Brackenridge, so you spend your time in front of the camera instead of in traffic.
Can we bring our dog to our engagement photos?
Absolutely, at dog-friendly spots like Brackenridge Park and the River Walk, where pets must stay leashed. Museums and some gardens do not allow pets, so plan the dog shots first and have a friend pick them up.
