Austin Location Guide

Where We’ve Shot Around Austin

Adjoa and Chris kissing in front of the i love you so much mural on South Congress during their Austin engagement sessionReal WU session
01Murals + Neon

South Congress (SoCo)

South Austin, Austin

The strip that feels most like Austin. We walked Adjoa and Chris down the middle of the avenue with the skyline behind them, then over to the famous love-note wall and the neon Austin Motel sign, all within a few blocks.

Shot ideas
A centered walk with the downtown skyline at the end of the avenue, the “i love you so much” wall, and the vintage Austin Motel marquee.
Pose to try
The back hug: one partner wraps their arms around the other from behind, chin on the shoulder, both smiling at the street.
Best light
Early morning to beat the mural line, or late afternoon when the storefronts glow.
Good to know
Public sidewalks and a mural on a private business wall, so no permit, but we shoot quickly and respectfully. Weekend lines at the mural can run long.

Katie and JoeJoe walking hand in hand down the Great Walk toward the Texas State Capitol dome in AustinReal WU session
02Classic Landmark

Texas State Capitol

Downtown, Austin

Pink granite, the oak-lined Great Walk and a dome taller than the U.S. Capitol. Katie and JoeJoe’s session moved from the south lawn to the Great Walk, then inside to the rotunda’s star floor and the grand staircases.

Shot ideas
Perfect symmetry down the Great Walk to the dome, a looking-down shot on the rotunda star, and the carved staircases inside.
Pose to try
The center-aisle kiss: stop in the middle of the Great Walk with the dome behind you and take your time.
Best light
Start about two hours before sunset, since downtown buildings block the light early. The inside works in any weather.
Good to know
Casual portrait sessions are generally welcome on the grounds and inside, but rules can tighten during legislative sessions. Weekdays are quietest, and we confirm the current rules before your date.

Badi and Tahirih at a picnic on the lawn at Butler Park with the downtown Austin skyline behind themReal WU session
03Skyline Lawn

Butler Park & Lady Bird Lake

South shore of Lady Bird Lake, Austin

The big lawn on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake gives you the whole downtown skyline with room to spread out. Badi and Tahirih brought a picnic, then changed into matching prints and danced with the towers behind them.

Shot ideas
A skyline picnic, wide dancing frames with the towers behind you, and a walk toward the hill at the edge of the park.
Pose to try
The twirl: one partner spins the other with the skyline behind you. Do it three times; the third is the keeper.
Best light
Late afternoon into golden hour, when the skyline warms up.
Good to know
Public city parkland that gets busy with events and runners on weekends. We keep the setup simple, and a blanket and a snack make it feel like a real date.

Stephanie and Jacob holding hands on a bridge over Lady Bird Lake with downtown Austin behind themReal WU session
04Urban Date Night

Downtown Austin & the Lake Bridges

Downtown, Austin

Wide stone steps, downtown crosswalks and the bridges over Lady Bird Lake, then drinks at a favorite spot. Stephanie and Jacob’s session was a real Austin date night from golden hour to dark.

Shot ideas
Walking frames on the stone steps, hand-in-hand shots on the bridge with the skyline over the water, and a cozy candid inside your favorite bar or restaurant.
Pose to try
The forehead touch: sit close on the steps, eyes closed, foreheads together, and breathe.
Best light
Golden hour on the bridge, then blue hour and warm indoor light.
Good to know
Public sidewalks and bridges, so no permit is needed. If you want a bar or restaurant in the session, we ask the staff first and keep it quick.

Mariana and Elijah embracing on the limestone ledges beside a pool at McKinney Falls State Park in AustinReal WU session
05Limestone + Falls

McKinney Falls State Park

Southeast Austin, Austin

Onion Creek spills over wide limestone shelves into clear pools, about 20 minutes from downtown. Mariana and Elijah waded into the shallows, climbed the rock ledges and finished under the cypress trees by the water.

Shot ideas
Reflections in the still pools, wide frames on the limestone shelves, and shady portraits under the cypress trees.
Pose to try
The almost kiss: lean in nose to nose by the water and stop just before. We shoot the moment before.
Best light
Late afternoon, when the pale limestone bounces soft light onto your faces.
Good to know
A Texas state park with a day-use entry fee, and portrait sessions follow Texas Parks and Wildlife rules, which we check when we book. Wear shoes that can get wet.

Chelsey and Cristobal walking between the vine rows at a Hill Country vineyard in Driftwood near AustinReal WU session
06Wine Country

Hill Country Vineyards, Driftwood

Driftwood, southwest of Austin, Austin

Rows of grapevines, a big Hill Country sky and a Tuscan-style villa. Chelsey and Cristobal photographed their session at Villa at the Vineyard, walking the vine rows and then heading indoors for a twirl under the chandeliers.

Shot ideas
Long walks down the vine rows, laughing runs toward the camera, and a polished indoor set with the villa’s staircase and chandeliers.
Pose to try
The walk and talk: hold hands and walk toward us down the row, talking and laughing. Nobody looks at the lens.
Best light
Morning or the last hour before sunset; midday sun is harsh in the vines.
Good to know
Vineyards and venues are private property, so we arrange access ahead of time. Already booked at a Hill Country venue? Ask about shooting your engagement session there.

Other Austin spots couples ask us about include Mount Bonnell, Zilker Botanical Garden, Laguna Gloria, the Greetings from Austin mural and the Pennybacker Bridge overlook. We are happy to plan any of them, and our full Austin guide covers the permit rules for each.

The Walk and Talk

Hold hands and walk slowly toward the camera while you talk to each other about anything but the photos. Swing your hands a little. Nobody looks at the lens.

Movement kills stiffness. This is the pose we start every session with.

The Forehead Touch

Stand close, close your eyes and rest your foreheads together. Breathe out. We move in tight and wait for the tiny smile that always shows up.

Quiet, intimate and the one parents frame.

The Back Hug

One partner stands behind the other, arms wrapped around the waist, chin resting on the shoulder. Both of you look out at the view, then turn in for a kiss on the cheek.

Perfect anywhere with a view, and it shows off the ring hand.

The Almost Kiss

Lean in slowly and stop about an inch apart. Hold it for a breath. We shoot the moment just before, which always looks better than the kiss itself.

All the romance, none of the awkward squish.

The Twirl and Dip

One partner spins the other out and back in, then finishes with a slow dip. Do it three times; the third is always the keeper.

Moves the dress or jacket and brings out real laughter.

The Laugh Break

We whisper something ridiculous for one of you to say in the other's ear. You will laugh, and that is the photo.

The frame couples tell us is their favorite, every time.

Timing & Style

When to Shoot in Austin, and What to Wear

Light and weather change everything in Texas. Here is how we plan around the seasons.

Spring

March to April

Bluebonnet and wildflower season, and the most requested time of year. Stay on paths and never trample the flowers. Book early.

Summer

June to September

Sunrise or the last hour before sunset only. McKinney Falls and the lake keep things cooler, and the Capitol has an indoor plan.

Fall

October to November

Warm golden light and comfortable evenings. Late November brings color to the cypress trees along the water.

Winter

December to February

Mild days and early sunsets, so sessions start earlier. Bare trees and soft light make clean, moody frames.

What to wear

  • Bring two looks One relaxed, one dressier. Change halfway and it feels like two sessions.
  • Coordinate, don’t match Pick a shared color family. Solids and texture beat busy prints and logos.
  • Plan your shoes Sneakers for trails and climbs, the nice pair in a tote for the final frames.
  • Show off the ring Get a manicure or at least clean nails. The ring close-up always makes the album.

Questions

Austin Engagement Photography, Answered

Where are the best places to take engagement photos in Austin?

Our favorites are the places we have actually photographed real couples: South Congress, the Texas State Capitol, Butler Park on Lady Bird Lake, downtown Austin and the lake bridges, McKinney Falls State Park, and the Hill Country vineyards in Driftwood. Pick skyline, landmarks, water or wine country, and we will build the session around it.

Do you need a permit for engagement photos in Austin?

It depends on the spot. South Congress, downtown and the lake bridges are public and need no permit. McKinney Falls charges state park entry and follows Texas Parks and Wildlife rules, vineyards and venues are private and need permission, and some city parks such as Mount Bonnell and Zilker require a City of Austin photo permit. We check the rules and handle every permit and reservation for you.

How much does an engagement photography session cost in Austin?

Pricing depends on session length and whether it is bundled with wedding photography. Many couples add their Austin engagement session to a photography bundle at no extra sitting fee, so reach out for an Austin-specific quote.

How long is an engagement photography session?

Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That is enough time for two outfits and one or two locations close together without feeling rushed.

When is bluebonnet season for engagement photos in Austin?

Bluebonnets usually peak from mid-March through mid-April, depending on winter rain. Book early, because spring dates fill first.

What time of day is best for engagement photos in Austin?

Golden hour, the last one to two hours before sunset, gives the softest, warmest light. In summer we also offer sunrise sessions to beat the heat and the crowds.

What should we wear to our Austin engagement session?

Bring one relaxed outfit and one dressier option. Solid colors and texture photograph best, and you should coordinate rather than match. For McKinney Falls, wear shoes that can get wet and bring the nice pair in a bag.

Can we do two locations in one session?

Yes. Pair spots that are close together, like the Capitol and South Congress, or Butler Park and the downtown lake bridges, so you spend your time in front of the camera instead of in traffic.

Can we bring our dog to our engagement photos?

Absolutely, at dog-friendly spots like Butler Park, the Lady Bird Lake trail and McKinney Falls, where pets must stay leashed. Plan the dog shots first and have a friend pick them up before we head somewhere pets are not allowed.

Do engagement photos come with our wedding photography package?

Many of our wedding photography and DJ bundles include an engagement session. Ask your planner or check the bundles page for current packages.

Do you shoot engagement sessions in the other cities you serve?

Yes. Beyond Austin, we shoot engagement sessions in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth and Phoenix. Visit the main engagement photography page to see every city.
