Dallas Location Guide

Where We’ve Shot Around Dallas

Every spot below is a place we have actually photographed a Weddings Unlimited engagement session, and every photo is from that couple’s real gallery. For each one you get the shots we plan, a pose to try, the best light and what to know before you go. Don’t see your dream spot? The location is always up to you.

Tonya and Alexander walking hand in hand past the Meyerson Symphony Center in the Dallas Arts DistrictReal WU session
01Architecture

Dallas Arts District

Downtown, Dallas

The largest contiguous urban arts district in the country, packed into a few walkable blocks. Tonya and Alexander started at the red-brick Cathedral Guadalupe, then moved to the glass and limestone of the Meyerson Symphony Center and the Winspear’s red walls.

Shot ideas
Cathedral Guadalupe’s spires against glass towers, clean architectural walks past the Meyerson, and close portraits against smooth limestone walls.
Pose to try
The forehead touch: lean against a stone wall, foreheads together, and let the city blur behind you.
Best light
Late afternoon. The tall buildings give you open shade most of the day.
Good to know
Public sidewalks and plazas, so personal portraits are welcome. Anything that blocks an entrance or uses a big setup needs permission from the venue.

Arsheen and Demetrius walking through Main Street Garden with the downtown Dallas skyline behind themReal WU session
02Skyline Park

Main Street Garden & Downtown

Main Street District, Dallas

A green lawn ringed by downtown towers, a giant eyeball sculpture and carved stone doorways a block away. We have photographed two sessions here, Arsheen and Demetrius and Kristelle and Rafael, and both found a new backdrop at every corner.

Shot ideas
Dramatic dips on the lawn with the skyline behind you, the giant eyeball sculpture, and old stone doorways and brass hotel doors nearby.
Pose to try
The dip: one partner dips the other with the towers overhead. Hold it for a three count.
Best light
Late afternoon for soft light between the towers, or after dark for the city lights.
Good to know
A public park and sidewalks, so no permit for a simple session. The eyeball sculpture sits behind a fence on private property, so we shoot it from the sidewalk.

Anessia and Juan beneath the brick and white columned arcade at the Meadows Museum on the SMU campusReal WU session
03Classic Campus

SMU & the Meadows Museum

University Park, Dallas

Red brick, white columns and a world-class collection of Spanish art. Anessia and Juan’s session moved from the museum’s columned arcade into the galleries and down its curving staircase.

Shot ideas
Symmetrical frames under the columns, quiet portraits in front of the paintings, and an overhead shot on the staircase.
Pose to try
The gallery walk: walk slowly apart through the galleries, then turn back toward each other.
Best light
Soft daylight outside in late afternoon. Inside, the galleries are lit for you.
Good to know
The Meadows Museum is a working museum on a private campus, so we coordinate indoor photography with the museum ahead of time. We avoid graduation and home football weekends.

Kelly and Jayson sitting together on the marble staircase inside The Adolphus hotel in downtown DallasReal WU session
04Old-Hollywood Glam

The Adolphus Hotel

Downtown, Dallas

Dallas’s grand 1912 hotel, with an ornate Beaux-Arts facade, a marble staircase, dark wood paneling and a lobby bar that feels like a movie set. Kelly and Jayson’s session went from the sidewalk out front to the staircase, the lobby and the bar.

Shot ideas
Twirls on the sidewalk under the ornate facade, the marble staircase, and close, moody portraits in the wood-paneled lobby.
Pose to try
The almost kiss: sit close, lean in nose to nose and stop just before. It glows in low, warm light.
Best light
Any time of day indoors; late afternoon for the facade.
Good to know
A private hotel, so we coordinate with the hotel before your session. Booking a stay or drinks at the bar makes it an easy yes, and it doubles as a great date night.

Katie and Jonathan walking beside the arched arcade and live oaks of the Mandalay Canal Walk in Las ColinasReal WU session
05European Canal

Mandalay Canal Walk, Las Colinas

Irving, Dallas

A little piece of Europe between Dallas and Fort Worth: a canal lined with Spanish arches, live oaks, cobblestone lanes and hidden stone stairways. Katie and Jonathan’s session found a new backdrop every few steps.

Shot ideas
Walking frames along the arched arcade, sitting portraits on the stone stairs, and narrow cobblestone lanes with iron balconies.
Pose to try
The stair sit: sit a step apart, lean in close with one arm around, and talk to each other.
Best light
Morning or late afternoon; the oaks and buildings give open shade.
Good to know
Public walkways with shops and offices around them, so no permit for a simple session. Weekday mornings are quietest.

Lexi and Kade by the lake with the chapel behind them at Adriatica Village in McKinneyReal WU session
06Croatian Village

Adriatica Village, McKinney

McKinney, north of Dallas, Dallas

A Croatian-inspired village with stone arches, a lakeside chapel and a 128-foot bell tower. We have photographed two sessions here, Lexi and Kade and Mariam and Ahmed, and it feels like a trip to the Adriatic without the flight.

Shot ideas
The chapel across the water, stone archways and doorways, and the bell tower against the sky.
Pose to try
The laugh break: a piggyback or a whispered joke in an archway. The real laugh is the photo.
Best light
Golden hour on the stone, or overcast days for soft, even light.
Good to know
No permit needed, but it is a real neighborhood, so we keep walkways and doorways clear and move for residents.

Marie and Matt walking hand in hand along a trail at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in PlanoReal WU session
07Trails + Prairie

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, Plano

Plano, Dallas

Two hundred acres of trails, tall prairie grass, creek bottoms and wooden bridges, with a Hill Country feel that is rare this far north. Marie and Matt’s session wandered from the wooded creek to the grasslands and the boardwalk bridges.

Shot ideas
Walks on the trails, portraits in the tall grass, and the wooden bridges and overlook.
Pose to try
The back hug: one partner hugs the other from behind in the tall grass. Say something funny right before we shoot.
Best light
The hour before sunset, when the grasses light up.
Good to know
A City of Plano preserve that is popular with photographers, so weekday evenings are best.

Other Dallas spots couples ask us about include the Dallas Arboretum, White Rock Lake, Klyde Warren Park, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. We are happy to plan any of them, and our full Dallas guide covers the permit rules for each. Heading west? Our Fort Worth engagement page covers the Stockyards and more.

Pose Playbook

Six Poses That Never Feel Posed

Not camera-confident? Nobody is at first. These are the prompts our photographers use at every Dallas session, and every photo below is a real Weddings Unlimited couple doing that exact pose. You don’t memorize anything, we walk you through each one.

The Walk and Talk

Hold hands and walk slowly toward the camera while you talk to each other about anything but the photos. Swing your hands a little. Nobody looks at the lens.

Movement kills stiffness. This is the pose we start every session with.

The Forehead Touch

Stand close, close your eyes and rest your foreheads together. Breathe out. We move in tight and wait for the tiny smile that always shows up.

Quiet, intimate and the one parents frame.

The Back Hug

One partner stands behind the other, arms wrapped around the waist, chin resting on the shoulder. Both of you look out at the view, then turn in for a kiss on the cheek.

Perfect anywhere with a view, and it shows off the ring hand.

Kelly and Jayson leaning in nose to nose for an almost kiss inside The Adolphus in DallasKelly & Jayson · The Adolphus

The Almost Kiss

Lean in slowly and stop about an inch apart. Hold it for a breath. We shoot the moment just before, which always looks better than the kiss itself.

All the romance, none of the awkward squish.

Demetrius dipping Arsheen for a kiss with the downtown Dallas skyline behind themArsheen & Demetrius · Main Street Garden

The Twirl and Dip

One partner spins the other out and back in, then finishes with a slow dip. Do it three times; the third is always the keeper.

Moves the dress or jacket and brings out real laughter.

The Laugh Break

We whisper something ridiculous for one of you to say in the other's ear. You will laugh, and that is the photo.

The frame couples tell us is their favorite, every time.

Timing & Style

When to Shoot in Dallas, and What to Wear

Light and weather change everything in Texas. Here is how we plan around the seasons.

Spring

Late February to April

The prairie at Arbor Hills greens up and Dallas Blooms fills the Arboretum with tulips. The prettiest season of the year.

Summer

June to September

Sunrise or the last hour before sunset outdoors. The Adolphus and the Meadows Museum give you gorgeous indoor options.

Fall

Late September to November

Warm light and cooler evenings, perfect for the Arts District and Adriatica’s stone streets.

Winter

December to February

Holiday lights downtown, crisp skyline nights and early sunsets, so sessions start earlier.

What to wear

  • Bring two looks One relaxed, one dressier. Change halfway and it feels like two sessions.
  • Coordinate, don’t match Pick a shared color family. Solids and texture beat busy prints and logos.
  • Plan your shoes Sneakers for trails and climbs, the nice pair in a tote for the final frames.
  • Show off the ring Get a manicure or at least clean nails. The ring close-up always makes the album.

Questions

Dallas Engagement Photography, Answered

Where are the best places to take engagement photos in Dallas?

Our favorites are the places we have actually photographed real couples: the Dallas Arts District, Main Street Garden and downtown, SMU and the Meadows Museum, The Adolphus Hotel, the Mandalay Canal Walk in Las Colinas, Adriatica Village in McKinney, and Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano. Pick architecture, skyline, old-Hollywood glam or nature, and we will build the session around it.

Do you need a permit for engagement photos in Dallas?

It depends on the spot. The Arts District, Main Street Garden, the Mandalay Canal Walk, Adriatica Village and Arbor Hills are public and need no permit for a simple session. The Meadows Museum and The Adolphus are private, so we coordinate with them ahead of time, and some places like the Dallas Arboretum and the Nasher charge a session fee. We check the rules and handle every permit and reservation for you.

How much does an engagement photography session cost in Dallas?

Pricing depends on session length and whether it is bundled with wedding photography. Many couples add their Dallas engagement session to a photography bundle at no extra sitting fee, so reach out for a Dallas-specific quote.

How long is an engagement photography session?

Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That is enough time for two outfits and one or two locations close together without feeling rushed.

When is the best time of year for engagement photos in Dallas?

Spring and fall. Spring brings green prairie and blooming gardens, and fall brings cooler evenings and warm light. In summer we shoot at sunrise or golden hour, or head indoors to The Adolphus or the Meadows Museum.

What time of day is best for engagement photos in Dallas?

Golden hour, the last one to two hours before sunset, gives the softest, warmest light. Downtown, stay 20 minutes past sunset and you get the city lights too.

What should we wear to our Dallas engagement session?

Bring one relaxed outfit and one dressier option. Solid colors and texture photograph best, and you should coordinate rather than match. Dressier looks shine at The Adolphus, the Arts District and SMU; casual looks fit Arbor Hills and Adriatica.

Can we do two locations in one session?

Yes. Pair spots that sit close together, like the Arts District and Main Street Garden, or The Adolphus and Main Street Garden, so you spend your time in front of the camera instead of in traffic.

Can we bring our dog to our engagement photos?

Absolutely, at dog-friendly spots like Arbor Hills, Main Street Garden and the Mandalay Canal Walk, where pets must stay leashed. Museums and hotels generally do not allow pets, so plan the dog shots first and have a friend pick them up.

Do engagement photos come with our wedding photography package?

Many of our wedding photography and DJ bundles include an engagement session. Ask your planner or check the bundles page for current packages.

Do you shoot engagement sessions in the other cities you serve?

Yes. Beyond Dallas, we shoot engagement sessions in Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Phoenix. Visit the main engagement photography page to see every city.
