Houston Location Guide

Where We’ve Shot Around Houston

Every spot below is a place we have actually photographed a Weddings Unlimited engagement session, and every photo is from that couple’s real gallery. For each one you get the shots we plan, a pose to try, the best light and what to know before you go. Don’t see your dream spot? The location is always up to you.

Aylin and Chris kissing at the foot of the garden mount at McGovern Centennial Gardens in Hermann Park, HoustonReal WU session
01Gardens + Reflection Pool

Hermann Park & McGovern Centennial Gardens

Museum District, Houston

The Houston backdrop we photograph most. Aylin and Chris started at the foot of the garden mount in McGovern Centennial Gardens, wandered the formal garden rooms and finished at the reflection pool as the city lights came up. We have also photographed Endashaw and Bethelhem, Kristi and Phillip and Alyssa and Robert here.

Shot ideas
The spiral garden mount and its cascading fountain, oak-lined garden paths, the Sam Houston monument arch, the pagoda in the Japanese Garden, and the reflection pool at blue hour.
Pose to try
The walk and talk down a garden path, then a slow dip at the reflection pool as the sky turns blue.
Best light
The last two hours before sunset, then 20 minutes of blue hour at the reflection pool.
Good to know
A public park where the Hermann Park Conservancy sets the rules for professional photography in the gardens. We confirm the current policy and any permit before your date. Weekday evenings are calmest.

Lynza and Joseph under the stone arch at Mercer Botanic Gardens north of HoustonReal WU session
02Botanic Garden

Mercer Botanic Gardens

Humble, north Houston

Harris County’s botanic garden has a little of everything: a sandstone archway, a pavilion over a lily pond, boardwalks and tall East Texas pines. Lynza and Joseph moved from the arch to the pond for a twirl on the lawn. It is also where we photographed Jasmin and Keymahr, Jocelyn and Jan Carlos and Jae and Ricardo.

Shot ideas
The sandstone archway, the pavilion reflected in the pond, boardwalks through the water plants, and pine-framed walks.
Pose to try
The twirl: one partner spins the other on the lawn by the pond. The third spin is the keeper.
Best light
Morning or the last two hours before sunset. The tall pines shade the paths most of the day.
Good to know
A Harris County park with free admission. The county sets the rules for portrait sessions, so we check them when we book. Bring bug spray in summer.

Fatima and Mario on the walk in front of the Lovett Hall arch at Rice University in HoustonReal WU session
03Campus Arches

Rice University

West University / Museum District, Houston

Rose-colored brick, long arcades and a canopy of live oaks. Fatima and Mario started under the oaks, then worked through the arcades to the arch at Lovett Hall. We have also photographed Marissa and John and Hollie and Daniel on campus.

Shot ideas
Symmetrical frames through the Lovett Hall arch, long arcade walks with repeating columns, and portraits under the live oaks.
Pose to try
The almost kiss under the oaks: lean in nose to nose and stop just before.
Best light
Late afternoon. The arcades give you open shade all day.
Good to know
A private campus where casual portraits on the grounds are common. We avoid commencement and move-in weekends and follow any campus rules on professional photography.

Karrie and Stu on the Sabine Street Bridge over Buffalo Bayou with downtown Houston towers behind themReal WU session
04Skyline + Bayou

Buffalo Bayou Park & the Sabine Street Bridge

Downtown, Houston

The best skyline view in Houston. Karrie and Stu walked the trails under the white-barked trees, then finished on the Sabine Street Bridge with downtown towers right behind them. We have photographed Danielle and Alejandro, Courtney and Micheal and Crystal and Raul here too.

Shot ideas
The skyline from the Sabine Street Bridge, trail walks under the tree groves, and the colorful murals under the freeway.
Pose to try
The dip against the bridge railing with the skyline behind you, and a laugh break on the trail.
Best light
Golden hour, when the towers glow, or right after sunset for the city lights.
Good to know
A public park, so a simple portrait session usually needs no permit. The trails are busy with runners and bikes, so we keep the path clear.

Raphael dipping Zeriya in the rotunda of the historic Julia Ideson Building in downtown HoustonReal WU session
05Historic Library

Julia Ideson Building

Downtown, Houston

Houston’s 1926 Spanish Renaissance library, with a painted rotunda, wood-paneled reading rooms, grand staircases and a courtyard garden. Zeriya and Raphael went from the reading tables to the rotunda balcony, and Marissa and Ihsaan paired it with the reflecting pool at City Hall next door.

Shot ideas
A dip in the rotunda, candid portraits at the reading tables, the staircases from above, and the carved front doors.
Pose to try
The almost kiss between the bookshelves: warm light, a quiet corner and all the time you want.
Best light
Any time of day inside; late afternoon for the courtyard.
Good to know
Run by the Houston Public Library, which schedules photo sessions by reservation for a fee. We book it for you, and it is our favorite rainy-day and summer plan.

Brittany and Forrest on a pedestrian bridge along The Woodlands Waterway north of HoustonReal WU session
06Waterfront Walk

The Woodlands Waterway

The Woodlands, north of Houston

A walkable waterfront of bridges, fountains and restaurants about 30 minutes north of downtown. Brittany and Forrest walked the bridges and the waterside path, then finished with a date-night set at Hearsay on the Waterway.

Shot ideas
The orange pedestrian bridges, the tree-lined waterside path, and a candid date-night set at your favorite restaurant.
Pose to try
The walk and talk along the water, then a lean on the bridge railing.
Best light
Late afternoon into dusk, when the waterfront lights come on.
Good to know
Public walkways, so no permit for a simple session. Restaurants are private, so we ask first and keep it quick.

Quinn dipping Taylor beside vintage locomotives at the Galveston Railroad MuseumReal WU session
07Island + Railroad

Galveston Island

Galveston, an hour south of Houston

Victorian streets, a historic railroad museum and the Gulf. Taylor and Quinn shot among the vintage locomotives at the Galveston Railroad Museum, while Ashley and Quincy and Marissa and Tyler both chose the palms and the beach at Hotel Galvez.

Shot ideas
Vintage locomotives and rail cars, the palm-lined grounds of Hotel Galvez, the Seawall at sunset, and the iron-front buildings on The Strand.
Pose to try
The dip beside a steam engine, or the back hug on the Seawall watching the waves.
Best light
Golden hour on the Seawall. Overcast days are beautiful at the railroad museum.
Good to know
The railroad museum charges admission and schedules photo sessions itself, and Hotel Galvez is private, so we coordinate both ahead of time. The beach and the Seawall are public.

Other Houston spots couples ask us about include Discovery Green, the Houston Arboretum, Market Square Park, Memorial Park and the Heights. We are happy to plan any of them, and our full Houston guide covers the permit rules for each.

Pose Playbook

Six Poses That Never Feel Posed

Not camera-confident? Nobody is at first. These are the prompts our photographers use at every Houston session, and every photo below is a real Weddings Unlimited couple doing that exact pose. You don’t memorize anything, we walk you through each one.

Aylin and Chris walking hand in hand down a garden path in Hermann Park, HoustonAylin & Chris · Hermann Park

The Walk and Talk

Hold hands and walk slowly toward the camera while you talk to each other about anything but the photos. Swing your hands a little. Nobody looks at the lens.

Movement kills stiffness. This is the pose we start every session with.

Marissa and John touching foreheads with their eyes closed on the Rice University campusMarissa & John · Rice University

The Forehead Touch

Stand close, close your eyes and rest your foreheads together. Breathe out. We move in tight and wait for the tiny smile that always shows up.

Quiet, intimate and the one parents frame.

Jasmin hugging Keymahr from behind in the gardens at Mercer Botanic GardensJasmin & Keymahr · Mercer Gardens

The Back Hug

One partner stands behind the other, arms wrapped around the waist, chin resting on the shoulder. Both of you look out at the view, then turn in for a kiss on the cheek.

Perfect anywhere with a view, and it shows off the ring hand.

Fatima and Mario nose to nose for an almost kiss under the live oaks at Rice UniversityFatima & Mario · Rice University

The Almost Kiss

Lean in slowly and stop about an inch apart. Hold it for a breath. We shoot the moment just before, which always looks better than the kiss itself.

All the romance, none of the awkward squish.

Joseph twirling Lynza beside the pond at Mercer Botanic GardensLynza & Joseph · Mercer Gardens

The Twirl and Dip

One partner spins the other out and back in, then finishes with a slow dip. Do it three times; the third is always the keeper.

Moves the dress or jacket and brings out real laughter.

Karrie laughing up at Stu as they stand hand in hand in Buffalo Bayou ParkKarrie & Stu · Buffalo Bayou

The Laugh Break

We whisper something ridiculous for one of you to say in the other's ear. You will laugh, and that is the photo.

The frame couples tell us is their favorite, every time.

Timing & Style

When to Shoot in Houston, and What to Wear

Light and weather change everything in Texas. Here is how we plan around the seasons.

Spring

March to May

Azaleas, wildflowers, mild evenings and green everything. The most popular season, so book early.

Summer

June to September

Hot and humid. We shoot at sunrise or in the last hour before sunset, and the Julia Ideson Building is a cool indoor plan.

Fall

October to November

The best weather of the year, with warm light and lower humidity.

Winter

December to February

Mild days, early sunsets and holiday lights downtown. Bring a layer for the evening.

What to wear

  • Bring two looks One relaxed, one dressier. Change halfway and it feels like two sessions.
  • Coordinate, don’t match Pick a shared color family. Solids and texture beat busy prints and logos.
  • Plan your shoes Sneakers for trails and climbs, the nice pair in a tote for the final frames.
  • Show off the ring Get a manicure or at least clean nails. The ring close-up always makes the album.

Questions

Houston Engagement Photography, Answered

Where are the best places to take engagement photos in Houston?

Our favorites are the places we have actually photographed real couples: Hermann Park and McGovern Centennial Gardens, Mercer Botanic Gardens, Rice University, Buffalo Bayou Park and the Sabine Street Bridge, the Julia Ideson Building, The Woodlands Waterway and Galveston Island. Pick gardens, skyline, historic architecture or the coast, and we will build the session around it.

Do you need a permit for engagement photos in Houston?

It depends on the spot. Buffalo Bayou Park, The Woodlands Waterway and the Galveston Seawall are public and a simple session needs no permit. The gardens at Hermann Park and Mercer set their own rules for professional photography, the Julia Ideson Building books photo sessions by reservation, and hotels and museums are private. We check the rules and handle every permit and reservation for you.

How much does an engagement photography session cost in Houston?

Pricing depends on session length and whether it is bundled with wedding photography. Many couples add their Houston engagement session to a photography bundle at no extra sitting fee, so reach out for a Houston-specific quote.

How long is an engagement photography session?

Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That is enough time for two outfits and one or two locations close together without feeling rushed.

When is the best time of year for engagement photos in Houston?

Spring and fall. March through May brings azaleas and green gardens, and October and November bring the best weather of the year. In summer we shoot at sunrise or golden hour, or head inside the Julia Ideson Building.

What time of day is best for engagement photos in Houston?

Golden hour, the last one to two hours before sunset, gives the softest, warmest light. At Hermann Park and Buffalo Bayou, stay 20 minutes past sunset for blue hour and the skyline lights.

What should we wear to our Houston engagement session?

Bring one relaxed outfit and one dressier option. Solid colors and texture photograph best, and you should coordinate rather than match. Dressier looks shine at the Julia Ideson Building, Rice and Hermann Park; lighter, breezier looks fit Galveston and the gardens. Houston humidity is real, so bring blotting papers and a comb.

Can we do two locations in one session?

Yes. Pair spots that sit close together, like Hermann Park and Rice, or the Julia Ideson Building and Buffalo Bayou, so you spend your time in front of the camera instead of in traffic.

Can we bring our dog to our engagement photos?

Absolutely, at dog-friendly spots like Buffalo Bayou Park and parts of Hermann Park, where pets must stay leashed. Libraries, museums and some gardens do not allow pets, so plan the dog shots first and have a friend pick them up.

Do engagement photos come with our wedding photography package?

Many of our wedding photography and DJ bundles include an engagement session. Ask your planner or check the bundles page for current packages.

Do you shoot engagement sessions in the other cities you serve?

Yes. Beyond Houston, we shoot engagement sessions in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth and Phoenix. Visit the main engagement photography page to see every city.
