San Antonio Location Guide

Where We’ve Shot Around San Antonio

Every spot below is a place we have actually photographed a Weddings Unlimited engagement session, and every photo is from that couple’s real gallery. Adriana and David in front of the church at Mission San Jose in San AntonioReal WU session
01UNESCO Mission

Mission San José

Mission Reach, south San Antonio

The Queen of the Missions and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adriana and David’s session moved from the limestone church and bell tower to the long arched walls of the convento and the old carved wooden doors.

Shot ideas
The church facade and bell tower, the arched convento walls, carved stone doorways, and weathered wooden doors.
Pose to try
The forehead touch against a sunlit limestone wall.
Best light
Early morning or the last hour before sunset. Midday sun is flat and bright on the pale stone.
Good to know
Part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and still an active parish. Portrait sessions are generally welcome on the grounds, but we avoid Mass and weddings and check current park rules before your date.

Sarah and Jacob kissing beside the pond and stone steps at the Japanese Tea Garden in San AntonioReal WU session
02Garden + Waterfall

Japanese Tea Garden

Brackenridge Park, San Antonio

A former rock quarry turned into terraced gardens, koi ponds, stone bridges, a waterfall and a pagoda-style pavilion. Sarah and Jacob wound down the stone stairways to the ponds, and Tobie and Arnie found the waterfall on their own session.

Shot ideas
The stone stairways and bridges over the koi ponds, the waterfall, and the pavilion across the water.
Pose to try
The back hug on a stone bridge, looking out over the ponds.
Best light
Morning is quietest. Late afternoon puts warm light on the quarry walls.
Good to know
A free city garden in Brackenridge Park. The city sets the rules for professional photography, so we confirm them and any permit when we book.

Kaylynn and Daniel on a garden bench in front of the McNay Art Museum mansion in San AntonioReal WU session
03Spanish Colonial Mansion

McNay Art Museum

Alamo Heights, San Antonio

Texas’s first modern art museum lives in a 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival mansion with tiled courtyards, carved doorways, fountains and sculpture gardens. We have photographed three sessions here: Kaylynn and Daniel, Jennifer and William and Debbie and Daniel.

Shot ideas
The white mansion from the lawn, carved doorways and tiled courtyards, the fountain, and the pond in the garden.
Pose to try
The almost kiss in a shady courtyard corner.
Best light
Late afternoon, when the white walls glow instead of glare.
Good to know
The McNay offers grounds photography passes for portrait sessions, so we book one for your date and follow its rules. The galleries inside have their own policy.

Sierra and Daniel on an arched stone bridge along the San Antonio River WalkReal WU session
04Riverside Downtown

The River Walk

Downtown, San Antonio

Arched stone bridges, cypress trees, flowers and hotel balconies right over the water. Sierra and Daniel started in a historic downtown hotel, then followed the river past the stone bridges and stairways.

Shot ideas
Portraits on the arched stone bridges, riverside walks under the cypress trees, stone stairways and historic hotel lobbies.
Pose to try
The dip: in a grand hotel lobby, or on a quiet stretch of the river.
Best light
Early morning, before the crowds and the boats. Blue hour brings the lights on.
Good to know
Public walkways that get crowded by midday, so we plan early. Hotels and restaurants are private, so we ask before shooting inside.

Rebecca and Christopher walking across a historic iron truss bridge in Brackenridge ParkReal WU session
05River + Iron Bridges

Brackenridge Park

North of downtown, San Antonio

Old oaks, stone walls and historic iron bridges over the upper San Antonio River, right next door to the Japanese Tea Garden. Rebecca and Christopher paired the two for a garden-and-river session.

Shot ideas
Walks across the iron truss bridges, stone-wall portraits under the trees, and the river through the arches.
Pose to try
The twirl on the bridge deck. The third spin is the keeper.
Best light
Late afternoon, when the light filters through the trees.
Good to know
A public city park, so simple portrait sessions are common. We check city rules for professional photography when we book.

Lilly and Sean walking through the piazza at Eilan Hotel in San AntonioReal WU session
06Italian Piazza

Éilan Hotel & Spa

La Cantera, northwest San Antonio

A Tuscan-style village with a cobblestone piazza, colorful facades, grand staircases and a chandelier-lit lobby. Lilly and Sean went from the piazza to the stairs and then inside for a glamorous finish.

Shot ideas
Walks across the piazza, the grand staircases, colorful facades, and a warm, glowing set inside.
Pose to try
The walk and talk across the piazza, hand in hand.
Best light
The hour before sunset on the piazza; any time indoors.
Good to know
A private resort, so we coordinate with the property before your session. Booking dinner or a stay makes it an easy yes.

Pose Playbook

Six Poses That Never Feel Posed

Not camera-confident? Nobody is at first. These are the prompts our photographers use at every San Antonio session, and every photo below is a real Weddings Unlimited couple doing that exact pose. You don’t memorize anything, we walk you through each one.

Lilly and Sean walking hand in hand toward the camera at Eilan in San AntonioLilly & Sean · Éilan

The Walk and Talk

Hold hands and walk slowly toward the camera while you talk to each other about anything but the photos. Swing your hands a little. Nobody looks at the lens.

Movement kills stiffness. This is the pose we start every session with.

The Forehead Touch

Stand close, close your eyes and rest your foreheads together. Breathe out. We move in tight and wait for the tiny smile that always shows up.

Quiet, intimate and the one parents frame.

The Back Hug

One partner stands behind the other, arms wrapped around the waist, chin resting on the shoulder. Both of you look out at the view, then turn in for a kiss on the cheek.

Perfect anywhere with a view, and it shows off the ring hand.

The Almost Kiss

Lean in slowly and stop about an inch apart. Hold it for a breath. We shoot the moment just before, which always looks better than the kiss itself.

All the romance, none of the awkward squish.

The Twirl and Dip

One partner spins the other out and back in, then finishes with a slow dip. Do it three times; the third is always the keeper.

Moves the dress or jacket and brings out real laughter.

The Laugh Break

We whisper something ridiculous for one of you to say in the other's ear. You will laugh, and that is the photo.

The frame couples tell us is their favorite, every time.

Timing & Style

When to Shoot in San Antonio, and What to Wear

Light and weather change everything in Texas. Here is how we plan around the seasons.

Spring

March to April

Wildflowers and bluebonnets along the roadsides and mild evenings. The most requested season, so book early.

Summer

June to September

Hot. We shoot at sunrise at the Missions or in the shady gardens, and hotels give you a cool indoor plan.

Fall

October to November

Warm light and cooler evenings, perfect for the River Walk and the McNay.

Winter

December to February

The River Walk holiday lights, crisp evenings and early sunsets, so sessions start earlier.

What to wear

  • Bring two looks One relaxed, one dressier. Change halfway and it feels like two sessions.
  • Coordinate, don’t match Pick a shared color family. Solids and texture beat busy prints and logos.
  • Plan your shoes Sneakers for trails and climbs, the nice pair in a tote for the final frames.
  • Show off the ring Get a manicure or at least clean nails. The ring close-up always makes the album.

Questions

San Antonio Engagement Photography, Answered

Where are the best places to take engagement photos in San Antonio?

Our favorites are the places we have actually photographed real couples: Mission San José, the Japanese Tea Garden, the McNay Art Museum, the River Walk, Brackenridge Park and Éilan Hotel. Pick historic missions, gardens, a Spanish Colonial mansion or the river, and we will build the session around it.

Do you need a permit for engagement photos in San Antonio?

It depends on the spot. The River Walk and Brackenridge Park are public, the Missions are a national historical park with active parishes, the McNay offers grounds photography passes, and hotels like Éilan are private. The city also sets rules for professional photography in its parks and gardens. We check the rules and handle every permit and reservation for you.

How much does an engagement photography session cost in San Antonio?

Pricing depends on session length and whether it is bundled with wedding photography. Many couples add their San Antonio engagement session to a photography bundle at no extra sitting fee, so reach out for a San Antonio-specific quote.

How long is an engagement photography session?

Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. That is enough time for two outfits and one or two locations close together without feeling rushed.

When is the best time of year for engagement photos in San Antonio?

Spring and fall. March and April bring wildflowers and mild evenings, and October and November bring cooler nights and warm light. In summer we shoot at sunrise, and in winter the River Walk holiday lights are magic.

What time of day is best for engagement photos in San Antonio?

Golden hour, the last one to two hours before sunset, gives the softest, warmest light. At the Missions and on the River Walk, sunrise gives you the place almost to yourselves.

What should we wear to our San Antonio engagement session?

Bring one relaxed outfit and one dressier option. Solid colors and texture photograph best, and you should coordinate rather than match. Soft, light colors look beautiful against the Missions’ limestone and the McNay’s white walls, and jewel tones pop at the River Walk and Éilan.

Can we do two locations in one session?

Yes. Pair spots that sit close together, like the Japanese Tea Garden and Brackenridge Park, or the McNay and Brackenridge, so you spend your time in front of the camera instead of in traffic.

Can we bring our dog to our engagement photos?

Absolutely, at dog-friendly spots like Brackenridge Park and the River Walk, where pets must stay leashed. Museums and some gardens do not allow pets, so plan the dog shots first and have a friend pick them up.

Do engagement photos come with our wedding photography package?

Many of our wedding photography and DJ bundles include an engagement session. Ask your planner or check the bundles page for current packages.

Do you shoot engagement sessions in the other cities you serve?

Yes. Beyond San Antonio, we shoot engagement sessions in Houston, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and Phoenix. Visit the main engagement photography page to see every city.
