Holy Rosary Catholic Church stands at 3617 Milam Street in Midtown Houston, just south of downtown. The parish was founded in 1913 by Dominican Friars at the invitation of the Bishop of Galveston, and the Dominicans still serve it today within the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston. The present Gothic church was designed by Houston architect Maurice J. Sullivan, broke ground in September 1932 and was blessed in November 1933. It was built with a Bedford stone exterior, Texas limestone interior walls and a purple and green slate roof, and the main altar was carved from stone quarried near McNeil, Texas. The high vaulted nave, stone detailing and stained glass make it a formal, historic ceremony setting. Couples work through the parish office on marriage preparation, and the reception is normally held at a separate venue nearby.
